In Pythagorean numerology, every letter has a value from 1 to 9. Adding the letters of Sophia yields these three numbers — a playful read on the name's character.

My wife's grandmother was Sofía — Spanish spelling. We went with Sophia for the English spelling so teachers wouldn't struggle. In retrospect I kind of wish we'd kept the accent.
